Yes, there was a PIL filed by the SDMC members to reopen all classes from 1 to 10 and to start MDM immediately. The response was very good. However, after Justice Nagarathna Madam got elevated to SC, the new CJ and other senior judge has taken over and the case is for hearing in the October.
Bringing SMC members and teachers to forefront is very crucial to move forward. We can explore the possibility of filing a PIL to relieve teachers from the election duty given the education emergency in the state though the RTE empowers the states to take their services during elections, census and other natural calamities. They can deploy personnel from other departments.

Yes, I think the RTE Forum is planning to meet this month or early next month.
We should do our best to highlight the extra-ordinary callousness of the system in denying children their fundamental right to education.
In Karnataka, last year itself a PIL was put in the Karnataka High Court which took the matter quite seriously (both RTE and right to food/nutrition under MMS). The directives of the Court were listened to by the Executive. (Niranjan would have details). If the CJ is sensitive, this can be helpful.
The proposed meeting could discuss a PIL as an immediate action as well.

Guru

Dear Guru: The situation in Jharkhand is even worse than I thought, as you can guess from this short note. Teachers are on election duty and there is little chance of them being able to spare much time for children in the next few months even if primary/UP schools reopen. By that time children will be catapulted three grades ahead of their pre-lockdown class. As it is, some of them are saddled with textbooks in English and Sanskrit even if they have forgotten the Hindi alphabet! Sooner the Jharkhand meeting can happen the better...
Cordially,
Jean

Dear friends,
Starting from this issue, we will be providing a brief fortnightly internal update to those who are participating in the work/ meetings of the National Coalition on the Education Emergency (NCEE). The internal update will take only a few minutes to read. Feel free to make suggestions and any help in any area! Please visit the education emergency website <https://educationemergency.net/> for more information.

* Maharashtra: NCEE spoke at a meeting on Sept 18, organized by the RTE Forum, Maharashtra <https://educationemergency.net/advocacy-campaigns/> and other organizations, and discussed the education emergency context and the work of the Coalition. The research brief released by the NCEE was presented to an audience of around 450 teachers, parents and RTE activists, in Marathi.

2. Education Support Group
* The Education Support Group had prepared a template for documenting the work done by organizations in ‘community learning centres’ during the pandemic. Six organizations have shared their work <https://educationemergency.net/category/innovative-models/> as per this template.
