[17:10] Dhamodharan: Good Evening all
[17:10] jennifer: Good evening all.
[17:15] Ranjani: Good evening and welcome to all
[17:16] arun: Hi. I am in. Arun
[17:16] Ranjani: Welcome, Arun. Glad you could make it
[17:17] arun: Thank you.
[17:18] marudam: Hi from Marudam (Harish, Poornima, Uma)
[17:18] Ranjani: Welcome, Marudam team
[17:25] marudam: Amazing that you could use cable TV
[17:26] Ranjani: Indeed
[17:26] Ranjani: That is very innovative
[17:28] marudam: Cable TV is better than online learning at home
[17:28] Ranjani: Welcome Prof Ramanujam
[17:32] Dhamodharan: I have two questions
[17:32] Somya Nand Gubbachi: I have a coupleof questions
[17:37] Atanu Sain: Thank you all for listening me.
[17:44] Uma: Good Evening all
[17:45] marudam: Decentralized decision making is something really important, we feel
[17:56] Gurumurthy: i have made her presenter
[17:58] Gurumurthy: yes Anusha you can move the slides and Venita could present
[18:13] marudam: I have a concern. When we develop oppurtunities tailored for development according to this presentation they should be neutral and free of a framework of religion, caste, gender etc. But now with the closure of schools, are these neutral platforms accessible in communities?
[18:21] marudam: Im in COMPLETE agreement with the point of free play .. Outdoor activity seems not only vital to early childhood, but also across ages
[18:22] marudam: especially when the children are going to come back after a long gap
[18:22] ramanujam: this is such a central and important issue, not only for pre-school but for children at all stages of schooling: analysing how children spend their school time is critical.
[18:23] Dhamodharan: Central Govt is not allocating money for Education. 2019 - 20 they allocated 3.95% from GDP for KG to University. How are going to push ECE?
[18:24] Ranjani: There is much to be said for learning that is rooted in their contexts, and using their bodies - movement, hands. We need to define learning outcomes in a more comprehensive manner
[18:25] arun: We are so happy to hear Prof. Venita Kaul's presentation. Its wonderful and affirming all the important points. Thank you, Prof. Kaul and thank you Ranjani for organising this talk.
[18:25] Dhamodharan: SRI - Suggested by the world bank but ensuring skills is very poor. What is your suggestion for ensuring SRI in ICDS and other ECE care center
[18:26] marudam: It seems that it is crucial to empower teachers and volunteers in the community as well as mini schools and regular schools to conduct free play and to organize outdoor learning
[18:27] Gurumurthy: yes, to start with, do not pressurise teachers on a given "syllabus"
[18:27] arun: Absolutely Gurumurthy sir
[18:28] Gurumurthy: syllabus = https://www.britannica.com/topic/Procrustes
[18:29] jennifer: Thank you for this, Prof. Kaul and Ranjani....my key take-away is to take back this idea of free play, outdoor play and story telling to the teachers. It's also important to talk to parents about why this focus is important - because parents (esp in cities!) are more worried than teachers about "syllabus" :-(
[18:30] Gurumurthy: all expenditure on education is investment:-)
[18:30] Gurumurthy: the most imp investment society could make
[18:31] Atanu Sain: We need to repurposing the curriculum which will help children to learn in school as well as their home. Because school closure and reopening is going to be a common phenomenon in future. We should not overburden parents but their involvement might ensure continuation of learning in case of any disruption in schooling.
[18:33] Uma: In Maharashtra, the bridge course had no suggestions for children entering grade 1. Teachers we work with are asking us what they should do with these children. And children in grade 2 currently are those who have missed an entire year and are at pre-grade 1 level
[18:33] marudam: Thank you Prof Venita ... Such an important finding which needs to be emphasized and taken up very seriously
[18:34] Uma: Is there any suggestion that you would give for them?
[18:34] Gurumurthy: Uma very imp question/point
[18:35] Atanu Sain: Tank you Prof Kaul for an enriching session.
[18:35] Uma: Another issue in the rural area is to coax parents on the importance of keeping children in the fold of learning
[18:36] Gurumurthy: we must think if simple short videos for parents with these messages would be useful. since this has to be really on a large scale.
[18:36] Gurumurthy: so parents could do few supportive/doable activities / support at home
[18:37] Uma: Yes Guru..some organisations in Maharashtra are creating resources. But one may need to see if they are structured along a pedagogic approach suggested by Prof Kaul
[18:38] Uma: But it would really help to have different messages going out to parents regularly
[18:39] Gurumurthy: its excellent TN Govt is consciously planning along these lines Jam! good role model for other states. 6 months 'open learning' model
[18:40] Somya Nand Gubbachi: I have a question
[18:40] Ranjani: Please post your question, Somya,
[18:40] Gurumurthy: 6 months is good since it ends in Mar (normal academic year end). at the end of 6 months, some simple assessment would be needed to check if more such open learning time would be needed
[18:41] Somya Nand Gubbachi: how do we rationalise sub-par learning for underserved children while the others are continuing with accelerated learning
[18:42] Gurumurthy: This only reflects existing inequity no? yes more investment must be a necessary part of advocacy
[18:44] Uma: Are there any discussions around learning and teaching of science in middle and higher grades? This is also a question we are grappling with. Teachers in W.Bengal have shared that children are barely able to read...it was already low, but is exacerbated now
[18:44] Gurumurthy: the increased stratification due to covid is a real challenge.
[18:46] Gurumurthy: yes Jam!! we will do our bit
[18:46] Somya Nand Gubbachi: I am sosorry. I need to log out
[18:47] Uma: Thank you for an interesting session. Will need to log out now.
[18:48] jennifer: Thank you, Ranjani. It was a good session!
[18:48] Gurumurthy: thank you!
[18:48] arun: Thank you all.
[18:48] Dhamodharan: Thank you all
